DormItem - Boston, MA
By Dan | March 18, 2007
DormItem is a startup company based just outside of Boston, MA and founded by two college students, Dan Scudder and Zack Coburn. DormItem is a college classifieds search engine, that uses its proprietary ‘microregional’ searching to bring students the latest items for sale on their campus and at nearby schools. The DormItem vertical search engine has indexed over 20 sites that deliver content to college students since its launch in November 2006. Lucky for DormItem, Techcrunch picked it up at launch and has since expanded to 200 colleges nationwide.
DormItem is a self-funded startup with a small team. Its a Ruby on Rails application, cutting site development time into 1/3 of what it would take using other programming languages. Of course, no college focused site would be complete without Facebook integration, and DormItem has that too.
