Job Loft - Toronto, ON, Canada
By Adam | March 20, 2007
So you are in high school, maybe even college, and you want to find a job to fuel your ’95 Honda Civic and support some underage drinking. Aside from flogging your resume at the local mall, what are you to do?
Job Loft, a startup based in Toronto, seems to have an answer. Founded by recent information technology grads Chris Nguyen, Sunny Mokha, Andy Lai and Lee Liu – Job Loft provides a forum for service, hospitality and retail companies to connect with younger job seekers.
While other online job sites like Monster and Career Builder have opportunities in these categories, their technology architecture and business model is clearly not designed with the under-21 job seeker in mind. Job Loft, on the other hand, has included a variety of features that cater to this niche market. Travel sensitive listings, relevant bus routes, RSS, tagging and SMS are all integrated into the search functionality of the site. For a student who can’t afford the time or gas money of a 45 minute commute, these features make finding a job that much easier.
Though the founders point out the challenge of attaining funding in a “non-tech” city, free Canadian health care definitely looks good on the balance sheet.
Outside the Valley Score
Location: Toronto = 2
Founders: First Time Entrepreneurs = 2
Technology: Google Maps, AJAX, SMS, .NET = 0

Cold winters, fresh entrepreneurs, bootstrapped and 2,600 miles from San Francisco… definitely “outside the valley”.
