The Lackluster State of Web 2.0
By Jason | March 21, 2007
Thankfully, I am not the only one noticing it…
EarlyStageVC has a great writeup, Web 2.0-Over and Out. In it, Peter Rip says -
Many of us in the VC community have been quietly wondering about the state of Web 2.0 innovation. We aren’t seeing much. Startup activity remains strong, but the consumer web landscape seems to be populated with the same bodies with different skins. Another video deal here; another social networking deal there, and social [feature] everywhere.
When you start talking about capital and investment, the last thing a VC wants to hear is what they have been listening to for the last three years.
“My site allows users to connect. It is a social video platform.”
Fantastic… So are a thousand others.
The question is, what value does your startup bring to the table? What need are you identifying? Who exactly is your target market? In other words, how are you adding value to the internet and your users?
Anyone can build a social networking site in a day. There are open source platforms that do it with a simple php script. In the end, figure out what makes your company better and build on that. You will get a lot more exposure and the reception will be much warmer.

Great post. I came across this comedic cliche today of the increasingly saturated world of web 2.0: http://uselessaccount.com/

Thanks Adam! That is a great link by the way.
I go through my feedreader every day and think, “been done… was done… failed business…” I am not saying there isn’t tons of great stuff out there, but when the barrier of entry is effectively zero, it takes strategy to win!
