Mobivity - Mobile Marketing for Small Businesses
By Rob | April 6, 2007
Greg Harris doesn’t think it should cost $10,000 to run a marketing campaign on a cell phone, so when his job was outsourced to India, he took his severance package and used the money to start Mobivity started when Greg needed a simple mobile messaging service. The pricing was outrageous, and he thought there was a better way. The entire idea took 8 months from concept to launch. The company is boostrapped, but is starting to look for some angel investors.
I asked Greg about the pros and cons of being outside the valley.
I think there definitely is a small disadvantage to being outside the valley. Being close to New York, we’ve joined up with some networking groups which has put us in touch with potential investors, but I’m sure it would be easier out there. Overall I would say that as far as running the business and getting talent, being outside the valley is not an issue. We are currently running as a virtual company in 4 different locations.
I predict a lot of success for this company if they can develop the right partnerships. Disintermediation is always a good strategy.
Outside the Valley Score
Location: Princeton (and virtual)= 3
Founders: First Time Entrepreneur = 2
Technology: Existing technologies = 2
Funding: Self Funded = 3
Total Score - A perfect 10. A virtual team, working on their first project, boostrapping, using existing technologies. Proof that you can still pursue very cool ideas outside the valley.
