About Us

This blog is dedicated to profiling companies outside of Silicon Valley and, usually, outside of California in general. Each company is given a score based on their ties to the Valley. The score shouldn’t be interpreted as a good or bad thing necessarily, but over time, you can get a feel for whether or not non-Valley companies are more or less successful than Valley companies.

We also write a lot about startups, ideas, tactics, funding sources, and general tips for getting things done if you don’t live in California. There are some other hot startup places (Seattle and Austin, to name two) but this site is really intended for the entrepreneur that doesn’t have those connections.

The Writers

Jason Drohn -

Todd Earwood - Todd is a serial entreprenuer and based in Louisville, KY. He has founded and sold several businesses in the telecom and web services industries. In 2005, Todd was a co-founder of Almost Mediocre, a Los Angeles-based web video company that has sold web properties to Sprint, Freemantle Media and MTV. Todd is currently the Chief Content Officer and co-founder of Jotzel Media and can be found blogging at ToddEarwood.com
You connect with Todd here on Linked In.

Rob May - Rob has a module in his brain that thinks about business 24/7. His ability to turn a casual conversation at a party into a discussion of revenue recognition principles or the effects of cognitive biases on business decisions has made sure he never gets invited a second time. Rob started his career as a digital circuit designer. He moved on to own a sports training business, a web consulting company, and is now involved with several startups. He ran the Business Experiment, and is currently working on a video yellow pages idea. He has been blogging for 4 years at Businesspundit.com.

Charlie O’Donnell-

Adam Runquist- As a marketer, entrepreneur, and proverbial “business geek”, Adam has always had a fascination with internet technology and web startups. He currently lives in Houston, TX but was born and raised in Calgary, Canada (yes, he loves hockey). Adam is presently a Product Manager for an industrial technology company; a role that allows him to implement two of his main interests: business-level strategy and monetization models. In his down time, Adam flexes his entrepreneurial muscle as a co-founder of the Onerio Group – a partnership that purchases and starts businesses. Feel free to send him an email at adam (at) outsidethevalley (dot) com.

Dan Scudder- Hi! I’m Dan. I’m a student at Babson College in Wellesley, MA studying entrepreneurship. I founded Moses Marketing Ventures LLC, and the first product we launched was DormItem, a college classifieds search engine built in Ruby on Rails. I think the internet is a cool place, and it plays a big role in helping entrepreneurs connect and grow their businesses faster than ever before.

Sarah Tavel- At least right now, Sarah collects a steady, bi-monthly paycheck from Bessemer Venture Partners, where she is an Analyst in their Larchmont office. If she is not tracking down exciting technology companies or riding the MetroNorth, you can find her in the pool halls of nyc. You can email her at sarah at outsidethevalley dot com.

Will Murphy- Will loves innovation, creativity, and business. His background is in Economics and IT. He is always analyzing business and technology trends and looking to the future. He has been involved in several small companies and start ups, as well as mid-size, and large companies. He loves great ideas. He also blogs at TomorrowsTrends .
